I’ve been doing yoga for over a year now, and I’ve noticed that my skin looks better than it has in years. But, a few months ago I noticed a few bumps on my face, and the skin on my arms was flaking and dry. So, I decided to ask my yoga instructor what she thought the cause of this could be. For five days I thought about this every time I passed a reflective surface. I had just started a hot yoga class, and my face was covered in little puffy red spots because of it. I’ve had it since I was 13. I struggled with acne when I was six and thought my pores were reacting badly to the large amount of sweat I was secreting. Then it occurred to me that perhaps the cause of my skin problems was the fact that I was lying on a carpet that was teeming with bacteria (I didn’t clean my carpet very well at the time). I changed my makeup, put baby wipes in my yoga mat to wipe my face as soon as I finished savasana, and splashed cool water on my face as soon as I reached the bathroom.
But I never considered that the cause of my rash was anything internal. Turns out my body is probably detoxing. Wait, before you start saying What is Ganesha? Throw yourself at me, let me explain.
Detoxification has become a buzzword. People detox with juices, raw foods, hot water and lemon in an effort to cleanse themselves and look radiant (while ultimately losing excess weight). But our bodies detoxify naturally. And many, like me, see a pimply teenager at the beginning of the cures as a new yoga practice or a change in diet, rather than a radiant yoga goddess.
Hot yoga makes you sweat and makes you feel like you are cleansing from the inside out. The skin is one of the most important organs for the removal of toxins from the body. This means that most accumulated toxins, from macaroni and cheese to Chinese food, are excreted through your pores, which can cause temporary pimples. This is perfectly normal.
So what can you do to speed up the detoxification process?
- Drink plenty of water to remove impurities.
- For an extra cleansing of the body, you can drink warm lemon water in the morning.
- Eat healthy! Your body’s working overtime now. Avoid dairy products, fried foods, too much oil and meat.
- Get some rest. Take some extra time to recover.
I got glowing skin that my non-yoga friends envy, and hot yoga helps maintain it by providing a daily mini-detox. Also, the above recommendations to fix acne caused by hot yoga…. yes, they also help to prevent it.
