Like so many around the world, my family’s summer plans were unclear because of COVID-19. This year, my children quietly completed kindergarten and fifth grade. The class ended up without their friends and their vacation. A quick celebration on Zoom was fun, but my husband and I wanted to do something special to give him courage in our new world of social distance and not being able to hug our friends. Our family values experiences more than material possessions, and we knew we wanted to travel, but we had to look for what was safe. My husband said: Let’s go for a ride, and I was on my way. Here are some lessons we learned from our trip: 1. Travel Light Photo at Lake Powell With two adults and two kids, I thought we’d have to pack up half the house to get on the road comfortably. It turned out that the van we rented was equipped with a lot of equipment. On the list of necessities for our trip were clothes, food, sunscreen and my yoga mat. It was a gift to see how little we need in our daily lives, and when we returned from the walk, we donated several bags of clothing and personal effects. We realized that we needed each other, shelter, food and care for ourselves. 2. Homage to Mother Nature Grand Canyon Photo My family was looking forward to the first day of our trip to the Grand Canyon. The grandeur of the landscape gave us the impression of having entered a sacred space. I learned that the Indians call the Grand Canyon the womb of Mother Earth. As the sun disappeared behind the canyon, I saw that the land was full of life: A hawk circled overhead, and the rocks were bright in the twilight. My kids were particularly fascinated by the vastness of the place and had some very sweet conversations about how they want to go back when they grow up and come all the way here. It was a pleasure to listen to them reflect and plan. 3. Deep breath Photo in Monument Park Monument Valley, Utah, is 1200 feet above sea level, and I felt my lungs screaming for air as we climbed the mountainside. It was very hot in the park, and I felt a small panic attack begin in my body. Then I remembered the last time I took a hot yoga class and the feeling was very similar. Hot yoga is something I’ve come to enjoy while reminding myself to regulate my breathing, and this yoga was no exception. Breathing slowly and steadily helped me to focus again. This land borders Navajo territory, and many Potter ceremonies take place in this part of the United States. I imagined that the heat was cleansing and I was immediately relieved. 4. On the other side of the discomfort – growth photo in Narrows, Zion National Park Our exploration of Utah continued with a trip to the Narrows in Zion National Park. It is called Narrows because it is the narrowest part of Zion Canyon. We did our homework and knew we needed gear for this trip. We rented neoprene socks and shoes, and also poles, because on some parts of the trip we had to walk through waist-high water. Upstream we learned to avoid the black rocks in the water, as they are often slippery, and to look for more porous rocks. The first few steps I ran around like a Pink Panther – feet in front of my chest, trying to get my bearings on the ground. I had heard several stories about sprained ankles and wanted to be careful and stay safe. Gradually I got back to my normal pace and realized that I had forgotten to look up because I was stepping so carefully. When I finally looked up, I saw stone walls 1,000 feet high surrounding me and sunlight breaking through the clouds. I had to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of this scene and remind myself that there is growth on the other side of discomfort. 5. Stay true On the last day of our trip, I woke up earlier than my family and headed to the Virgin River behind the campground. I saw a beautiful rock and sat down to meditate and enjoy the warmth and brightness of the sunlight. After a few minutes of concentration and celebration of this beautiful moment on the road, my youngest son Rocket climbed into the river and sat on my lap. My oldest son Cruz took a picture of this sweet moment that I will always cherish. Our time in nature has taught us some wonderful and important lessons that we will take with us.In the fall of 2012, I got invited by Manduka to visit their headquarters in New Jersey. I was asked to write a blog about my experience there and I was elated! I decided to take the opportunity to do something I’d never done before: travel solo, on a bus, for more than three days straight. I toured New York, Boston, Providence, and New Hampshire. I spent three days in Boston and Rhode Island, and one day in North Carolina. I cycled through cities, towns, and backwoods roads. I ate street food, and I ate restaurant food.
