Seniors Get Free Yoga Classes in New York

Support for yoga for seniors is growing fast, especially in New York City. The city’s Department of Aging has partnered with the Yoga Council to offer free yoga classes to seniors at the United Nations Plaza. The program integrates ancient forms of yoga with modern techniques, and provides yoga instruction as well as a chance to socialize with other seniors at the five-day program.

Every year, most of the country’s seniors try to stay healthy and active. But for older adults, the simple act of bending over to pick up a pen or raising their arms to stretch might be more difficult than it sounds. That’s why many cities and towns offer free or inexpensive classes in yoga, tai chi, or other physical activities for senior citizens, who tend to be more susceptible to a host of health issues ranging from heart disease to arthritis.

New York City has launched a new service for older adults who need help getting cent and exercise and to maintain their balance. Seniors will receive free yoga classes every Tuesday and Thursday at the Centers for Yoga and Health at Jamaica Center in Queens.

Senior discounts are becoming more common as America’s population ages. Customers over the age of 55 may save money on coffee, donuts, restaurant meals, groceries, clothes, travel, and even gym memberships.

However, today’s seniors are interested in more than simply food and clothing, which is why they may increasingly find discounted or even free yoga lessons.

In New York, there are no cost yoga classes.

The New York Daily News found a group of elders doing yoga for free at Cunningham Park in Oakland Gardens, Queens, courtesy to the City Parks Foundation, a charity that is unique in its development of activities across parks in each of the five boroughs. The program, which runs twice a week through June 20, has received a lot of positive feedback.

“I’m in fantastic shape… Sandy Mounsey, 65, says, “My asthma has improved 100 percent since I began!” The other students compare the workout to “WD-40 for their body.”

Yoga And Seva

Other free low-impact exercise courses for seniors are cropping up in New York; the CityParks Senior Fitness program, which also provides free tennis lessons and fitness walks in 14 New York City parks, now offers free yoga classes. At the meanwhile, Sunrise Tai Chi sessions are held in Fort Tryon Park, and twice-weekly tai chi seminars are held in Bryant Park in Manhattan.

In yoga, selfless service, or seva, is very important; with all of the free courses for seniors going on right now, the individuals and organizations who make health available to seniors without charging a fee are doing some major seva!
